Of note: “There are tools. There are people who use the tools. And then there are people who are tools. Know the difference.”  Social media is not an end – it is a means to an end.  That end is getting your message out using the tools at your disposal. It should not be your only means of communicating.  If it is, you’re doing it wrong.

I actively avoid calling myself a “self-proclaimed social media expert”.  Why?  My belief is that if you have to tell people how awesome you are at it, chances are, you’re not actually that good at it.  Plus, I am not one. No one is.  We are all communicators – some of us just choose to use different tools or methods.  The good communicators are ones that can best utilize the tools in the best way for the message they are trying to send.

Moral of the story:  Think twice before tweeting that brillant idea.  Let the message drive the choice of the tool, not the other way around.
